White Tail Deer Odocoileus virginianus |
---|---|
A small group of white-tailed deer trying to enjoy the peace of a cemetery, until a filthy human comes along. - Since the female (doe) at the front showed her displeasure at my presence, I backed off a little, although I don't think they were truly disturbed by my presence. Whitetail deer, are very typically deer; they have deer faces and deer legs. They look like a lot of other deer, but are famous for their magnificent white bottoms. |

Autumn Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis |
---|---|
When a squirrel demands its photo taken, you oblige. - Grey squirrels are charming rodents gifted in the fields of dexterity, tree-climbing, acrobatics, and potentially world-domination. Though often considered something of an invasive nuisance, within their native ranges they are beneficial for forest regeneration due to their seed caches. And perhaps most importantly, their tails are fabulous. |

I am sure you've never seen nor heard of this mysterious mammal. It is very rarely seen, and feeds quite specifically on men under 5'7".

Squirrel Love Sciurus carolinensis |
---|---|
These creatures may often be seen plotting, as seen here. I was fortunate to make it away alive, by offering them a particularly splendid pinecone. |

Autumn Great Blue Heron Ardea herodias |
---|---|
A heron stands watch in the autumn breeze. - Very similar in appearance to the Grey Heron, the Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in North America, reaching over four feet tall. These birds excel at standing still in ponds and lakes for long periods of time looking disgruntled, and occasionally stabbing something delicious with their face. |

Ruby-throated Hummingbird Archilochus colubris |
---|---|
A visitor to my garden, named Thistle, feeding on a buddleia (it's not a native plant, so I make sure to cut the dead flowers before they go to seed). |

Ring-necked Ducks Aythya collaris |
---|---|
Their name initially seems strange, and I find myself wanting to call them ring-billed instead of ring-necked. Their collar is only on the male, and is not overly obvious until the light shines just so. So instead I am going to call them Morbles, because it makes about as much sense. Here the morbles are in breeding plumage; the dark head and golden eye denote the male. |
